Wesley Centre Memories > Ann Morgan
“Methodism played a big role in my family from long
before I was born. My great grandfather was a Methodist preacher over in
Mexbrough and my family were regular attendees at services in the Chapel.
During the 1930’s my auntie, Sarah Henshaw, looked
after the Girl Guide group and my mum, Mary Henshaw was the Brown Owl.
Both of them sang in the choir. Sarah was married in the Chapel in 1939.
I was christened there in 1937 and my maiden name, Ann
Orme, was the very first name on the christening role.
During the war years my family used to be part of a
club called the “Sunday Nighters”. It was an informal group really who
used to meet up at a different house each week after the evening service.
Most of the men were away fighting and it gave people a chance to catch up
with each other and share their feelings. It was an enjoyable way for the
community to support one another.
As I was growing up I attended Sunday school at the
Chapel and was an attendant to the Sunday school queen. I was always at
the youth club and remember the church hall being opened in 1954. There
was often something going on there, in fact sometimes I think I was there
practically every night!
On the 8th February 1958 I married Terence Morgan in
the Chapel. The service was carried out by Pastor Cox who also christened
my eldest son in 1959. He then went on to be a driving instructor which
was a bit of a career change! My second son was also christened there in
1963 by John Bromley.
