Wesley Centre Development History

The site comprises two existing buildings; the former Wesleyan Methodist Church and its associated church hall. The church is a detached stone building dating from early/mid 19th century, which has approximately 180 m2 of original floor space. Despite being a building of significant architectural interest the Wesleyan Methodist Church is not a listed building. The church hall is built from brick and dates back to 1954. It has approximately 158 m2 of usable floor space.

The Wesleyan Methodist Church became empty towards the end of 2002 after being used briefly as a chemical laboratory. Four years previously it was in use as a church (with community hall), before closing as a result of the falling congregation size. At that time the church hall was regularly (over) used as a community resource by a large number of community groups.

The site was identified by Maltby CDT as a building capable of accommodating their current and future activities and as an opportunity for the bringing together of a number of like-minded organisations providing a variety of services to Maltby and the surrounding communities. Altogether the project would represent the creation of a single roof hub of activity providing the opportunity for a more co-ordinated approach to social, economic and environmental regeneration of the local area.

The buildings were purchased on behalf of Maltby CDT by Manor and Castle Development Trust for £120,000, being funded by an application to SRB 6. Ownership of the buildings has since been transferred to Maltby CDT.

Maltby CDT aims to significantly expand its activities through the development and delivery of projects within the next three years. Maltby CDT has been identified within Maltby’s Future (Maltby's Community Plan) and the Integrated Development Plan as a key organisation to take forwards a number of projects. The building will function as an incubator for projects contributing to the social and economic regeneration of Maltby. As these projects develop, Maltby CDT will employ more staff who will require accommodation within the building.

The funding is being sourced to refurbish both the church and church hall and to provide an ‘atrium’ which will link the two buildings together. The church will have a second floor added to increase the floor space from 204m2 to 370 m2 (gross internal floor space) and will include a lift, upstairs toilets and two small kitchen areas. The atrium will provide a gross internal floor area of 120.2m2 and will include a lobby, informal seating area, toilets and a reception desk. The community hall will have new kitchen and toilet facilities and a refurbished meeting room and hall area.
